Meet Jannet in St. Augustine, Florida

By Jannet Walsh
Here is a video I photographed, produced and edited in the historic city of St. Augustine, Fla, founded in 1565. I just pushed record and walked in front of my video camera mounted on a tripod.

The music you hear in the background is really me playing my flute in my living room and edited in Audacity. A special microphone for my flute was attached and I recorded the music with a digital recorder. I then simply copied and pasted the music "O Son Do Ar" or "Sound of Air" to create the round style of this Galician folk song. Galicia is a region in Spain where the culture of the Celtic, people from Ireland and Scotland, combine their cultures.

One of my big projects in 2007 was a multimedia package on a new convent of three Catholic sisters in rural Ocala, Florida. The project included two Soundslides projects, English and Spanish, also a video in Spanish on the day of the blessing of the convent. This was part of my entry, along with my “Muslims in Marion” project, that earned Third Place for photo essay from Florida Press Club Excellence in Journalism Contest 2007.

Backyard visitors

By Jannet Walsh
I was busy eating breakfast on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, shortly after 7 a.m., my eyes were turned to see white birds flying into my backyard. My backyard must have been selected for the breakfast gathering. A flock of White Ibises were feeding in the location I once had a swimming pool. When I first noticed the visitors there were only a few birds, maybe 6 or more. When I photographed the flock, I can only estimate around 100 birds, but really it is unknown.

I knew I would only have one chance to photograph the birds. I opened my back door, pointed my camera and the flock took flight. The excitement and sound of the wings flapping was incredible! According to the U.S. Geological Survey website, usgs.gov, the White Ibis has a length of 22 inches with a 38 inch wingspan.

Tragedy and destruction

By Jannet Walsh

Photos, multimedia by Jannet Walsh
The day three deadly tornados hit central Florida will be a day I will never forget. I compare it to a war zone.

I was sent the first day to photograph the destruction in the Lake Mack and Pasiley area, Feb. 2, 2007. I have been a journalist since 1987, but this would be the day that will be marked in my mind. Loved ones were searching for their family and friends. I found Father Anthony Palmese, of St. Jude Catholic Church, from Marion Oaks,Florida, also a Marion County Sheriff’s Chaplain, located at a fire station in Pasiley with the list of the dead trying to comfort those searching for the unaccountable souls. Early in the morning 11 people died when the tornados hit, only in the Lake Mack area.

The next day I returned to photograph and produce a slideshow of the Living and Dead. The stories of how loved ones were found can be heard in my presentation. You will hear stories that are unthinkable and maybe make you more thankful for your life.

Painfully Becky Nolan, pictured above, talked about her late son Jacob Nolan, age 7, and her husband William Nolan, both died in the early Friday morning tornados near Lake Mack, a romote area in central Florida on the edge of the Ocala National Forest. This photo was part of my entry that earned Third Place for portrait/personality from Florida Press Club Excellence in Journalism Contest 2007.

Multimedia - "Muslims in Marion"

By
Jannet Walsh

In 2006 my big project for the year was a multimedia project, both still images and audio, producing three SoundSlides shows on local Muslims living in the county of Marion, in Ocala, Florida. The project was one of my more challenging attempts in journalism, but the hard work had a great outcome. The project “Muslims in Marion” multimedia project was nominated for the Chairman’s Award October 2006 from the New York Times Regional Media Group and was part of my entry that received the Florida Press Club Excellence in Journalism Contest 2007, Third Place for photo essay, along with New convent of nuns comes to Florida multimedia project.

The photo above is one that I took myself at the local Ocala Islamic Center, in Ocala, with one of the young ladies after photographing in the women’s prayer room. I made the photo by simply turning my camera around facing us, and started shooting. In the realm of photojournalism schools, this is called a “Hail Mary” shot as is only with a prayer you can get the photo, as you are not looking in the viewfinder!

I am wearing a hijab, or in Arabic meaning cover, that was pinned and “fashioned” by one of the ladies I meet. I only wore the scarf or veil in the prayer rooms. I must say I was delighted to have the access to make the beautiful photos you can see in my project.

Battle in St. Augustine

By Jannet Walsh

North Marion High School might have lost against St. Augustine High School, 35-0, in St. Augustine, Florida in the state semifinal Class 3A game, but only winners were on field.

There was great excitement and energy of the band, football players and the crowd at the semi final game. What I was found the most interesting is how the players handled themselves, even in defeat. All the players and coaches gathered in the middle of the field for a prayer at the end. From the location I was taking my photos I was not able to understand the words being said. Many teams would have only wished to have reached the state semifinals, but will never have the chance. It might be easier to win, but maybe more to learn in defeat.

Decisive Moment La Guadalupana

By Jannet Walsh
Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 – 2004) is known as the father of photojournalism. The famous French photographer really gave birth to the style of photography that is used today by newspaper photographers because of his use of his 35mm camera and this “street style” of photography. The phrase “decisive moment” is associated with this famous photojournalism pioneer. The moment you take or make a photograph really does matter!

I recently had a “decisive moment” while photographing Father Alfonso Cely, a Dominican friar from Colombia, at Catholic Center Our Lady of Guadalupe, in rural Ocala. I have created an audio slideshow to tell more about the particular moment.
